All You Wanted to Know about the American
Tinnitus Association
What is American
Tinnitus Association?
The American Tinnitus
Association or ATA is an organization dedicated to the cause
and cure of tinnitus. It has only one major goal to achieve -
to strive hard in order to improve research and find a cure for
tinnitus.
Ringing in the
ears
Tinnitus is the condition in
which you experience a ringing sound in one or both your ears
from a non-existent source of sound. Some people feel it in the
head too. This sound can vary from a whistling or a buzzing
noise to a clicking or a hissing sound. The sound perception
can be felt continuously or at intervals, the volume ranging
from low to very high in extreme cases.

The American Tinnitus
Association is the single organization that has the larger
interests of the tinnitus patients as its priority. It has
allocated a large amount of funds towards research by providing
grants to the best researchers all over the world. The ATA was
founded by Dr. Jack Vernon and Dr. Charles Unice in 1971with
the sole aim of finding a cure for tinnitus. It has, so far,
spent more than five million dollars for studies on Tinnitus
since 1980, out of which almost a million has been awarded as
grants in a single year in 2008.
Objectives of the
American Tinnitus Association
The American Tinnitus
Association aims at the following:
* To provide information and
help people suffering from tinnitus.
* To make more funds available
for deeper research into the factors that cause tinnitus and to
find a possible cure.
To achieve this goal, the
American Tinnitus Association has been continuously on the
move, implementing new ideas and concepts that would benefit
the people suffering from the condition as well as the
researchers and the medical personnel involved. A few of the
activities of ATA in this direction are:
* The American Tinnitus
Association has been constantly endeavoring to improve the
condition of people suffering from tinnitus, as it clearly
understands the mental agony that they face in dealing with it
in their day-to-day life.
* The American Tinnitus
Association works with compassion towards the millions of
tinnitus sufferers across the globe.
* It offers support to its
members who approach it with this ‘ringing problem’ and directs
them to medical health professionals for appropriate treatment.
It also lets you know the several options that may be employed
in managing the condition.
* It believes that a cure for
this ‘not-so-serious’ (but extremely annoying to people who are
suffering from it) condition is not very far away with major
breakthroughs in research underway, provided, adequate funding
and time are made available.
* It develops resources to
facilitate progress in discovering newer facts about tinnitus
that would eventually result in an effective cure.
* The American Tinnitus
Association has launched a magazine that is published thrice a
year. This magazine is beneficial for tinnitus sufferers who
are members of ATA.
* It has been found that this
condition has been on the increase among America’s army
personnel and is to be treated with prime concern.
* Last but not the least,
the American
Tinnitus Association is doing everything possible within its
capacity to get the support of the Congress to enable more
funding for its projects, so tinnitus sufferers can see
light at the end of the tunnel the promise of a cure for
their ill-fated condition.
If you are one of the 50
million Americans who are suffering from tinnitus and if you
are looking for effective help and advice to manage it despite
the challenges it poses, it would be an advantage to become a
member of the American Tinnitus Association, so you’ll learn to
manage your life better.
