Tinnitus Ringing
Part 2 of "What is Tinnitus?
What treatments do
healthcare professionals provide?
Physician
A medical professional can often assist if your tinnitus
ringing is creating sleep deprivation, severe anxiety, or even
depression. An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor
can also diagnose any medical problems that may be
creating your tinnitus. As well have your doctor check to
find out if tinnitus is a side effect of medication you
have been administering. And last but not least have your
doctor check your ears for ear wax. It's amazing
how many times a case of tinnitus is
remedied by the simple procedure of just purging the ear
wax!

Audiologist
Many audiologists have been trained in diagnosing tinnitus
ringing and developing treatments. A couple of methods used by
audiologists are Masking and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
(TRT). Focussing on methods designed to make
tinnitus less of a problem, many people find relief with this
methodology. At times hearing aids can be used to alleviate
tinnitus. To find an audiologist in your area look in your
Yellow Pages.
Psychologist
The same psychological methods
that have been used to manage pain and reduce stress can also
be helpful in treating tinnitus. e.g. a method called
Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy has
been highly successful in treating pain and this method has
been successfully adapted to treat tinnitus ringing.
Complementary and
alternative providers Many so called complementary and alternative
systems have been prescribed for tinnitus. These include
vitamins and herbs, acupuncture, naturopathic treatment,
hypnosis, holistic methods and probably others as
well.
How will hearing aids
affect my tinnitus?
Some people with hearing loss
find that wearing hearing aids actually help to make tinnitus
ringing considerably less noticeable. Hearing aids work by
amplifying sounds which then helps with a hearing problem. The
side effect of this is keeping the ears busy resulting in the
tinnitus to be less noticeable.
What if I think my
tinnitus was caused during my military
service?
Hearing loss or tinnitus may be
judged to be a VA disability. For more information contact your
VA Regional Office (1-800-827-1000) or contact a local Service
Officer.
WHAT CAN I DO TODAY ABOUT MY
TINNITUS?
Avoid loud
noise.
Loud noise will make your
tinnitus ringing temporarily or even permanently worse.
Protect yourself from extreme
noise such as, loud music, noisy power tools, chain saws,
rifles, and factory noise. When you are exposed to these types
of loud noises you must use ear plugs or ear muffs.
Avoid total
silence.
Strange as it may seem being in a
very quiet room will make your tinnitus ringing seem more
noticeable. To help with this, try being around low-volume,
pleasant sounds, such as music or nature sounds. The sound of
running water is especially helpful. Devices that produce
suitable sound include radios, CD players, tabletop fountains,
sound generators, and electric fans to name a few.
Search the internet for
further information, to decide for yourself which method of
treatment is best suited to you. Many people have found very
good success at alleviating tinnitus ringing by following the
methods taught in online ebooks such as The Tinnitus
Miracle
